Irish Wheelchair Association

Irish Wheelchair Association:
Home Truths

The aim of this project was to develop an awareness campaign to highlight the lived experience of disabled people in the housing market, particularly those on the approved social housing waiting list. This project highlighted areas of non-compliance with public sector equality and human rights through the lens of rights-holders' lived experiences.

The goals were:
To build awareness of the work that the Irish Wheelchair Association did around housing.
To bring service users' voices into the public domain.
To highlight the lack of wheelchair-ready houses in the market.

The aim of this content was to disrupt, to ignite outrage from the public, and to bring them along as campaigners. In this project, those locked out of the housing market exercised their right to be heard, to show that the “extra” space required by them was not a luxury or an extra but was, in fact, a human right.

This campaign was a huge success gaining national and regional press coverage, broadcast news segments on RTÉ and Virgin Media. Overall the campaign reached 3.8M and recently won an Irish Healthcare Centre Awards for Best Use of Social Media.
